What Is a Special Enrollment Period for ACA Health Insurance?

Life doesn’t always follow a set schedule—and thankfully, neither does health insurance. If you missed the annual Open Enrollment Period for ACA (Affordable Care Act) coverage, you might still qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

What Is a Special Enrollment Period?

A Special Enrollment Period is a window of time outside of Open Enrollment when you can sign up for a Marketplace health plan. But unlike Open Enrollment, SEPs require you to have a qualifying life event.

Common Qualifying Events:

  • Losing employer-sponsored health insurance

  • Getting married or divorced

  • Having a baby or adopting a child

  • Moving to a new ZIP code or county

  • Turning 26 and aging off a parent’s plan

  • Gaining or losing eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP

How Long Do You Have to Enroll?

You typically have 60 days from the date of the qualifying event to enroll in a new plan or make changes to your current coverage.
